Vladislav’s Translations of Twentieth-century French Verse
Abstract:
This article focuses on Jan Vladislav’s translations of twentieth-century French-language verse, which he published in book form (including in Kvart, his own samizdat series) and in the Světová literatura (World literature) periodical in the 1960s. After a brief introduction to Vladislav’s translation work in general and to his translations of twentieth-century French verse, particularly poems by René Daumal, Michel Deguy, Jean Follain, Michel Leiris, Henri Michaux, Jacques Prévert, Pierre Reverdy and Georges Rouault, the author discusses Vladislav’s translations of the individual authors. The emphasis is on those with which one can compare translations by other Czechs, consequently the article is chiefly a discussion of Vladislav’s Czech translations of Michaux, Reverdy and Prévert, including an assessment of their quality. It concludes with a summary of the special features of Vladislav’s approach and concisely suggests potential relationships with his own verse.
